50 Reasons We Love Our City

Our subjective guide to what makes Stamford great right now

Whether you are a longtime resident or have recently moved to the area, you’ll probably agree: the City That Works is a special place. From our beach parks to our backcountry woods, from our culinary hot spots and hoppin’ bar scene to our burgeoning art culture, Stamford has plenty to offer. Want to be in the know? Join us here and you’ll not only be part of the latest and greatest, you’ll be a true insider in no time.

1. Buy a Pretty Package
A bejeweled gift led us to Heart of Gold, where we met Debra and Susan Portanova. For thirty years the affable sisters have been selling beautiful jewelry, American crafts and fashion accessories in their intimate shop in Springdale. Debra and Susan pride themselves on their “like family” relationship with customers and their knack for helping gift buyers select the “just right” thing. They specialize in custom creations, including bridal party accessories, and excel at transforming family heirlooms into modern looks. And they offer the best gift-wrapping in town.

2. Explore Modernism
As soon as Design Within Reach opened in the South End, we promptly stopped by to lounge in its impeccable room sets. Of course, we couldn’t help imagining these modernist masterpieces in our own homes—the Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen would be perfect for the library, and there is a just-right spot in the master bedroom for a Moller Model Bench. Can’t figure out what to do with a problem area? Stop by the showroom’s Design Bar, where designers are on hand to outline decorative solutions for any living space. Get your tax refund early and start crossing out those gotta-have-it items on your wish list.

3. Spot Great Finds
Juliska greets visitors wandering into the city’s antiques district with a sparkling something old, something new vibe. The company’s Stamford-based headquarters features a retail outlet—a stunning shop that appeals to anyone‘s inner Martha with its stunning collections of vintage-inspired, but thoroughly modern china, crystal, flatware and linens. It’s the intriguing giftware, the constant promise of something fab and the wondrous home fragrance collection that keeps us coming back for more. That and the cappuccino too!

4. Be Transported
Regina and Michael Kirshbaum’s love of Bali and its artisans inspired their shop Agabhumi: the best of bali, an inviting tropical-themed surprise in a light industrial section of the South End. Trust us: It’s hard to resist piles of its affordable Beach Chic collection of jewels, sterling and gemstone pendants and the always on-trend leather goods and knitwear. But the best part is the personal attention. It’s not unusual for clients to pop in on their way to an event for an impromptu styling session and leave beautifully accessorized. The staff will also help you choose the perfect hostess gift while your packages are being wrapped.
