From the Editor: People's Choice

This has been a banner year for Stamford in Moffly Media’s annual Best of the Gold Coast poll (see pg. 71). Not only did more city hot spots score a win than ever before, but as the roundup shows, people from all over Fairfield County, through their votes, tell us they like to come here to wine and dine. With nearly 70,000 votes, almost tripling last year’s tally, the endorsement by our town neighbors (and our very own, of course) is certainly worth a self-congratulatory pat on the back. It also confirms what we have known for some time: that “The City That Works” likes to play at night and on weekends. And we prefer it that way.

All this is encouraging, especially when you consider that for the inaugural poll ten years ago, only a handful of Stamford businesses won (and only a few thousand votes were cast—some on handwritten ballots no less). It would seem appropriate then that in this issue we also raise a glass to winners in all categories in our Best of Stamford (see pg. 103). In it you will discover upset wins, new names and reliable favorites, large businesses and small mom-and-pops, all deserving of the nod. Regarded together they reflect how much there is to see and do within our borders. Keep this issue handy. It will serve you well as a trusty guide to summer food, fashion, fitness and family fun.

Speaking of homegrown, you will also learn about two extraordinary athletes—one a drag racer looking to advance her standings on the NHRA circuit, the other a hockey player who earlier this year signed a multiyear contract with the NHL’s New York Rangers (see pg. 111). Meet Sarah Edwards and Ryan Haggerty, two Stamford natives on the verge of professional greatness. I trust that one day soon we will all say, “We knew them when...”

Another occasion to look forward to is our approaching fifth birthday. Where did the time go? As you read this, all of us at Stamford magazine will already be working on our fall issue. In it, we will acknowledge our upcoming anniversary, when we will all gather to toast our great run so far. Cheers to five!
