I grew up in a family of world travelers. We shared so much wanderlust and foodie curiosity, that as soon as our tattered bags were unpacked, we began planning where to go next. Such was our DNA that we lived from trip to trip. So it was with special anticipation that we took on our first travel story, with the express purpose of providing a little something for everyone.
The brainstorming inevitably triggered a powerful nostalgia—and occasional urges to drop everything and head to the airport—but in the research process, we discovered a new trend: destinations and tours geared for the solo traveler. The options are exciting. If you’re single, no need to hold out for a travel partner. You can go with friends, or on your own. And whether you want to be active, lounge on a beach or tour museums, odds are there is something available for you.
But not all of us can get away, so the trick is to live each day as if on holiday. It seems as if Sharon Slocum knows how. Every time we met over the course of several visits to profile her garden, we always found her enjoying her views of Holly Pond. Hers is a gorgeous garden—it clearly shows her green thumbs and daily attention—but Sharon makes a point of not letting the labor detract from the pleasure she draws from its charm. Her morning routine often includes whipping up a fruit juice, and sitting out in the midst of nature, observing the water birds while the soft laps of the waves lend a peaceful soundtrack to the rising sun. And talk about an unobstructed water view!
No one deserves a break more than brothers Ahmad and Samad Mickens, two fitness professionals devoted to the empowering mission of RF Youth Boxing, which they run out of their gym Revolution Fitness in the South End. A demanding after-school program that helps teens improve physical and mental conditioning, RFYB is also designed to guide students who are at risk of trouble with the law to channel aggression in a constructive manner. In doing so, the kids pick up the right moves while gaining a sense of purpose and learning about self-respect and personal responsibility.
