The Avon Theatre Film Center hosted their 7th Annual Red Carpet Festival with the Avon’s Red Carpet Gala on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at l'escale at the Delamar Greenwich Harbor. This year’s gala celebrated the theatre’s 75th anniversary through the movies of 1939, still considered the most celebrated year in moviemaking in Hollywood. The gala featured twenty-four custom decorated tables highlighting different movies from 1939, including Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Stagecoach and many more classics.
Co-chairs of the gala were Jenny Clark, Susan Cullman, Jean Doyen de Montaillou and Deborah Royce. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s served as the debonair auctioneer for the live auction. Guests came dressed in glamorous evening gowns and tuxedoes or dressed up as characters from the films of 1939. Many posed with a leopard-print clad “Tarzan & Jane” couple from the 75 year-old infamous Tarzan Finds a Son movie! The Alex Donner Orchestra had many guests dancing even before dinner was served. They played many famous songs from iconic films, including the classic “I’m Off to See the Wizard”, which had guests singing along as they admired the gorgeous setting.
Deborah and Chuck Royce, co-founders of the Avon, saluted Northern Trust for their lead corporate sponsorship of the gala since 2008 and Moffly Media for their generous media support. Other major sponsors included Betteridge Jewelers, the Philip Johnson Glass House, and Adria de Haume. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal presented an official proclamation and the Avon Award for Support of the Arts to honoree, Ellen T. Reid, Senior Wealth Strategist at Northern Trust.
The gala kicked off the Avon's celebration of Hollywood and their annual Oscar®-Nominated Film Festival which runs throughout February and early March. The festival culminates with an Oscar® Night Party at the Avon on Sunday, March 2nd. All proceeds from the Avon Red Carpet Festival support the theater’s programming, operations and Annual Scholarship Fund for local high school seniors. The Avon is a member supported non-profit independent cinema located on Bedford Street in downtown Stamford, CT.
