The A-Team
Photographs by Erica Schietinger and William Taufic
We’d been planning our Chelsea Piers story since last fall, so when it finally came time to execute our on-site photo shoot of the professional athletes we featured in our July issue, we felt like we already knew them well. We certainly were in awe of their accomplishments. What we hadn’t expected was how funny this group could be. They had us laughing the whole time.
Photo shoots take longer than expected. When I set them up, people are often surprised by how much gear we bring, and how much time we need to set up before actual shooting begins (about two hours). Art director Garvin Burke may have a perfectly planned concept in mind, but when you factor in the intangibles (there are always a few), there inevitably is a lot of waiting.
Our group of athletes didn’t mind at all. They mugged for the camera, told jokes, teased each other, and in between takes, chatted with us and found ways to pass the time. So we thought we’d share a few outtakes with you.
Our thanks go out to Gigi Fernandez, Scott Berlinger, Natalie Grainger, Scott Bulkley, Matt Stack and Jamie Barone (and his stopwatch) for a memorable day.
